Following the launch of our dedicated #BBS4DoveHouse Just Giving page, and donation of £3,401 to purchase 2 urgently needed syringe drivers in February, we’ve delivered a variety of fundraising and volunteering activities, for our 2023 Charity of the Year, and had great fun in the process!
Current Fundraising Total – £6,259!
A big thank you to everyone who has supported the Campaign so far – we couldn’t have done it without you! So, we’re excited to announce that our Just Giving page total, which includes both online and offline donations, stands at £6,259 – over half-way to our target of £12,000!
As a local charity that has been serving the community of Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire for over 40 years, Dove House Hospice provides expert specialist care to adults living with progressive life limiting diseases including, but not limited to, cancer, neurological illnesses, heart diseases and respiratory diseases.
Unfortunately, the Hospice only receives the equivalent of 10% of its funding from government, which would cover less than 40 days running costs annually, so it shows just how vital the support of charity partnerships and local people are in ensuring all areas of the Charity’s care are maintained.
It is also a communion misconception that Dove House Hospice is just a place for people right at the end of their life; some patients may visit the Hospice for some time and be referred for many reasons, including pain and symptom management, respite, psychological support and family support.
Find out below what we’ve been up to in more detail…
Easter Egg Appeal – 52 eggs
Our Savings Team had the brilliant idea of launching an Easter Egg Appeal and a big thank you to everyone who donated a total of 52 chocolate eggs! Each of the 40 young people in the Charity’s Child Bereavement Groups received one, while the extra eggs were distributed to the other Community Groups. BBS staff, Lindsay and Nicola kindly volunteered to deliver the eggs to Hospice’s Friday Friends Group and then helped out by serving refreshments.
We’d also like to say a big thank you to Beverley FM for getting behind the Appeal, and spreading the word, which helped boost donations and raise awareness for Hospice care.
Dove House’s Child Bereavement co-ordinator, Jill Dolman, told us: “I am so grateful for the support that Beverley Building Society has given our Child Bereavement service. The young people and children I see in our groups are at their very worst time, so to know that someone else has thought of them brings such a smile to their faces. The eggs that I have given to the children through my one-to-one sessions have been a massive surprise to them and have helped to bring some unexpected joy, which is especially meaningful after they have worked so hard in talking about the circumstances of their loved ones death, and how they have been affected. Their smile says everything.”
Important equipment – £2,000
Beverley Building Society made another donation of £2,000 to enable the Hospice purchase 40 new chairs to provide comfort for families and loved ones visiting patients and also 3 new mattresses.
AGM member voting – £423.50
The Society donated 50p for every one of the 847 member votes we received at our 2023 AGM and this equated to £423.50 that was donated towards Hospice care.
Staff Direct debit contributions – £45 per month
We’re also delighted to share that, staff direct debit contributions have recently started and now total £45.00 per month. There are so many ways to offer support and this is another great way to give back via the secure giving link provided by Dove House.
Coronation red, white and blue! – £245.40
The Coronation of their Majesties, King Charles III and Queen Camilla gave the UK something to celebrate this month and BBS another great fundraising opportunity, which helped us to raise £245.40!
Visitors to branch generously made donations to Dove House Hospice in return for delicious Coronation-themed cupcakes, which were supplied by Beverley-based, talented caterer and cafe, Coles Kitchen. Customers also had the chance to win a spectacular hamper, while staff sported our national colours for a donation to help the fantastic work of the Hospice team.
Book exchange & Dress Down Fridays – £108.74
As if that wasn’t enough, we have on-going activities throughout the year, which help us to boost our fundraising efforts. So far this year our popular in-branch book exchange and ‘Dress Down Fridays’, where staff can don their favourite casual clothes in return for a donation, have together raised no less than £108.74
Thank you to everyone who has supported our 2023 Charity of the Year Campaign so far – you are helping to keep this vital service going.
If you haven’t yet got involved – we hope that you would like to “bring life to days where days can’t be added to life”, as the Hospice Team often say, and help us reach our £12k Charity of the Year Campaign Target by the end of 2023?
It takes just seconds to lend your support via our dedicated #BBS4DoveHouse Just Giving page, so please donate what you can…
