A huge thank you to everyone who attended Beverley Building Society’s latest AGM on 17 April 2024. We were delighted to see the best member turnout for many years and chat to everyone in a relaxed setting.
Once again, we’d like to pay tribute to Brown’s department store cafe, in Beverley’s town centre, where the event took place, and which created a warm and welcoming ambience with a delicious buffet for everyone to enjoy.
Our Chair, Karen Wint, opened the formal proceedings and reflected on the fact that the Society received excellent customer feedback in a challenging environment, grew mortgage balances by 8% and delivered a strong financial performance during 2023, which means we are well placed to continue investing in modernising the business. She was also delighted to inform the audience that we increased our charitable donations to £24,000 last year.
Janet Bedford, Society CEO, presented the financial highlights and reported that, against a challenging economic backdrop, we have been able to support savings members with good returns, protect mortgage members from high interest costs and continued to build a relevant and secure Society.
She stressed that, in the current financial services world, many banks are retreating from the high street and automating services, whilst in contrast – and central to our philosophy – we believe many of our customers still want to be able to talk to human beings and not chatbots and be treated as a person and not a transaction.
Since Beverley Building Society is owned by its members, Janet concluded by touching on our Smart Money People partnership which collects independent member feedback. She shared an impressive 4.9% out of 5% satisfaction rating and illustrated some positive testimonials on screen.
We also heard from our charity partners. Jonny Bottomley, from last year’s Charity of the Year, Dove House Hospice, who expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Beverley for raising over £13,200 to support people with life-limiting illnesses and their families in the East Riding. Our 2024 Charity of the Year, Yorkshire Cancer Research was represented by Andy Wilson who thanked the Society for its £2,000 donation to kickstart this year’s Campaign and explained we will be helping to support their early cancer screening programmes, through a variety of activities including their Walk for Yorkshire Campaign in May.
We then welcomed a variety of questions from members, which were answered by both Karen and Janet before the Results of the Resolutions took place and the buffet was opened.
