Rewarding local businesses - and doing our bit for a much-loved charity
At Beverley Building Society we’ve increased the interest rate on our Business Postal and Business Online Accounts. And as well as rewarding businesses, we’re pledging to donate 1p to the Beverley Community Lift (BCL) transport charity (Registered Charity No. 1163868) for every £1 a new or existing customer deposits between now and 31 December 2018, up to a maximum donation of £3,000.
The charity helps elderly and disabled people in Beverley and surrounding area, including Pocklington and Market Weighton – including some of our own customers – get out and about. For many, it is their only link to the outside world and provides them with transport to medical appointments, as well as friendship and a social outlet too.
Our support will help BCL, which operates from Beverley, to keep the wheels turning by funding essential maintenance work on its fleet of minibuses.
Recently, BCL appealed for members of the East Yorkshire community to rally round after the enforcement of European Union rules for transport providers meant it had to relinquish the commercial contract income that supported its vital community work.
The Society’s business savings accounts represent part of our commitment to supporting – particularly local – businesses, in an environment where many struggle to make any return on their excess funds.
And to kickstart our new relationship with the charity, we have also handed them our £500 AGM donation for this year.
Society Chief Executive Karl Elliott said: “We’re acutely aware that the current environment is a challenging one, particularly for smaller, independent businesses, not least because many business bank accounts pay little or nothing in interest, and often charge a monthly fee. We wanted to help a little by increasing the return businesses can achieve on any excess savings they may have.
“Because of its situation, BCL needs urgent support to help it continue to provide a vital service and we’re hoping that our pledge will go some way to encouraging other people in the community to get behind their appeal.”
BCL is working on a strategy to overcome the impact of EU transport rules which mean it can no longer maintain the commercial contracts like school transport that have so far brought in vital income to sustain its community transport services.
Charity Chief Executive Jan Stainforth said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity people and organisations like Beverley Building Society have shown since we called out for assistance. We’d urge any companies thinking of opening one of their business accounts: ‘help us reach the maximum of £3,000, and reap rewards yourself at the same time!’.”
