HERIB voted Charity of the Month
The second charity to be announced in 2017 as Charity of the Month at the Beverley Building Society is HERIB.
HERIB stands for the Hull and East Riding Institute for the Blind, the charity currently supports just over 2,300 people with sight loss in the area.
It provides services such as information, equipment and support for its members, they also provide home visits and have other mobile resources.
The charity runs day groups throughout the week and a ‘socialeyes’ programme, in order to reduce isolation of individual members and improve their general well-being.
We met with Angela Gregory from HERIB, to talk about the charity and hand over the £250 donation. She said, “Today somewhere in Hull & East Yorkshire someone was told that they are losing their sight and because of you, HERIB can answer their call for help”.
We spoke about the donations that HERIB receives and Angela told us how the charity receives absolutely no government funding, all of their operations are ran from donations they receive.
“We will be using this money to help fund our Home Visiting Service. Our Community Advice Officers made more than 4,000 Home Visits last year and this is service is particularly important when someone is newly diagnosed with sight loss. Their emotional and information needs can be significant. It can be a devastating time”.
Angela told us how eighty-eight pence from every pound goes to support services, such as the home visits and day groups, and HERIB has around 30 referrals a month.
The Society are proud to support its local community, if you know of any local charities that should be nominated to win Charity of the Month and the £250 donation, please email email@example.com
